Established in the spring of 1931, the purpose of the Society is to collect and preserve New Mexico folklore. The Society has sponsored many exhibits, lectures, folklore festivals, and publications. From 1944 until 1946, members participated in a project for the American Dialect Society, which was to collect proverbial sayings in English found in both written and oral traditions in New Mexico.
